for winning his last game at Bullit Park. Right now the guy is 307-150-4 and has a winning percentage of over 60 % (stats from a guy on the radio). I've got problems with the guy and don't think he's the worlds best person but congrats to him on a good run. Everyone else can post the b.s. below about having talent, ect. but I've saw tons of coaches do nothing with talent. Congrats to one of the best coaches ever to coach in the area.

I clapped and am sad to see him go, I wish he'd hang on until they closed the school. People at PV are spoiled, go watch other local high school games and tell me Phil isn't still one of the best.

Phil Robbins, the most successful coach in Lonesome Pine District history, coached his last home game as a Powell Valley Viking at Bullitt Park in Big Stone Gap, Virginia tonight. Taking on the Pound Wildcats, Robbins' Vikings jumped out to a 21-7 lead and rode the early momentum to a 48-21 win. But this game was more important than a 3-5 team taking on a 1-7 team, two sub .500 teams competing for a Lonesome Pine District victory(although thats slightly misleading, Powell Valley is still very alive in the playoff scenario). This game signaled the end of an era for all that have followed Powell Valley football. Taking over an upstart program on the rise from coach James Bolling, Phil Robbins came into Big Stone as an unknown and an outsider. But unbeknown to the people of the tiny southwestern Virginia town, a dynasty was born. After taking over a team that in 1982 that had won a state championship, Robbins turned a smaller, successful football team into the most dominant force in the areas history. 1983, Robbins' first year behind the helm, his Vikings finished the regular season unbeaten and won a region championship, only to fall to Perry -McClure in the state semi-finals. With the loss in the semi-finals fueling Robbins and the team, the Vikings followed up a successful 1984(8-2, missed playoff cut by a blade of Robbins' beloved Bermuda grass) season with a magnificent run to a state title in 1985. The 1985 state championship game saw the Vikings of Powell Valley take on Lunenburg Central, and Robbins win his first state title as the Vikings won a classic showdown 28-27 in one of the greatest Virginia High School League championship games ever.
From that season on, the ball kept rolling.

Beginning in 1989 and running to 1998, Robbins led his Vikings to an incredible six state titles in 10 seasons, a run never before seen in the Lonesome Pine District, including three times going back-to-back state titles (1989-90, 1994-95, 1997-98, a run of four state titles in five seasons). While the Powell Valley program began its ascent to the top in 1985, the Vikings claimed the throne with a dominant run in the 1990's.
After completing their second straight state title run and three titles in five years in 1990 with another win over Lunenburg Central, the Viking had become the most a true juggernaut of Virgina high school football. But the run was far from over.

As a skinny freshman stepped onto the practice field in 1992, no one ever dreamed of the highs that awaited the young team. A once-in-a decade player paired with an offensive coach who could turn good talent into great talent. Jones took over as the Viking starter two years later in 1994, and the duo never looked back.
After starting the 1994 season 1-2 with losses to Lee High and Richlands, the Vikings went on a tear of 24 straight wins and two state titles, and getting two straight wins over rival Appalachia, another state title contender in the mid 90s.
During Jones' final two seasons as a Viking, he put on some of the most unbelievable performances in VHSL history, including his famous performance against John I. Burton in 1994, which saw Jones rush for a state-record 462 yards. Jones was named VHSL Player of the Year back to back in 1994-95, and would move on from the Viking program to great heights. After having his pick of scholarship offers, Jones graduated from the University of Virginia while setting numerous rushing records for the football team and being invited to the Heisman Trophy ceremony. Eventually drafted with a top 10 draft pick by the Arizona Cardinals, Thomas Jones has became one of the most productive backs in NFL history, closing in on 10,000 career yards and a shot at the Professional Football Hall of Fame. Powell Valley won two state titles back to back in 1994, defeating -95, adding two more rings to Robbins' evergrowing collection of state titles, which had by then grew to 5. But as many predicted Robbins' run as top dog to be over, another skinny freshman joined the team and Robbins began what could quite possibly be the most dominant two year run in Region D history.

In 1997, when Julius Jones, the younger brother of Thomas and another elite prospect, took over as the Viking starter at halfback, the Vikings began a two-year run of complete dominance. Starting with the first game of the 1997 season, Coach Robbins led his Vikings to a record 28 straight wins, including two wins in state championship games. Many people in the area still tout the 1998 Powell Valley squad as the best football team to ever set foot on a field in southwest Virginia. Boasting a lineup full of stars to compliment the running of Jones, the 1998 team went all season only allowing one play over 10 yards from the line of scrimmage in the regular season , a show of complete defensive dominance. As the 1998 season ended with a two touchdown victory over Madison County, Phil Robbins had amassed 7 state titles in 14 years, four titles in seven years, and 6 titles in ten years.

While Robbins was never able to win another state title, coming the closest in 2004 when his Vikings fell to Manassas Park in the state title game, he had the joy of coaching all three of his sons (Wes, Andy, and Brad, the quarterback of the last PV state title contender in 2004) and amass a record unmatched by any other local coach. The Virginia High School league Hall of Famer will retire with a record of 307-150-4 and 9 state title rings (He won two more as the coach of the Viking track team), 12 Region D championships and 15 LPD championships, winning games at an absolutely astounding 67% winning percentage. While the area has produced such famous coaches as Jim Riggs, Ralph Cummins, and Tom Turner, no coach can match Robbins' state title wins or other records. So the win against the Wildcats tonight was much, much more than a win over a district rival. It signaled the end of an era, the end of the greatest dynasty in SWVA history and the end of the most prolific coach in the region's reign of dominance.

So congratulations Coach, we will never forget your contributions to Big Stone Gap and the Powell Valley Vikings athletics department. We will miss ya coach, gotdangitjibberyaish brad!
